Buddy McLean's Winter Hill Gang used to hang out in the bars that surrounded the Capitol Theatre. For a while the garage behind the Odd Fellows Hall served as their headquarters. In 1961 a gang war broke out between Charlestown's McLaughlin brothers and the Winter Hill Gang. Within four years, two dozen people were dead. On October 30, 1965, McLean left the Winter Hill Lounge with two friends, crossed Broadway to his car in front of the shuttered Capitol, and was blasted with five rounds from a 12 gauge shotgun. A policeman chased the assassin into the theatre but lost him as he disappeared out the back. Howie Winter became head of the gang, and when he went to prison, Whitey Bulger took over. Martin Scorsese is now completing a film about them called "The Departed" which stars Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg, and Leonardo DiCaprio.
